Patriot Golf Day is spearheaded by PGA Golf Professional
Dan Rooney of Stillwater, Okla., who has flown two tours of
duty in F-16s over Iraq.
Some 2,000 golf courses nationwide have registered to take
part in the nation's first Patriot Golf Day, Saturday,
Sept. 1.
The PGA of America and the United States Golf Association,
public and private facilities will ask patrons to contribute
donations to support families of soldiers who have become
disabled or lost their lives in the line of military duty.
Public golf facilities will request an additional $1 for
each green fee, while private facilities will ask patrons
for donations. Monies collected will go to Wounded Warriors,
Inc., also benefiting the Fallen Heroes Foundation to provide
support to the families of those who have been wounded, injured
or killed during combat operations.
"The United States Golf Association proudly supports
this worthy cause, said USGA President Walter W.
Driver Jr. Thousands of our volunteers regularly give
to the game and we hope the same spirit and generosity will
prevail this day. Millions of golfers making a small contribution
will make a large impact."
Patriot Golf Day has tremendous potential. With the
backing and support of the PGA of America, Golf Digest, National
Association of Golf Course Owners, the University of Tulsa,
the University of Oklahoma, CBS Sports, and others, the nationwide
event should be a huge success. Also, CBS plans to run a Patriot
Golf Day feature during their coverage of the PGA Championship.
As the number of fallen soldiers mounts, golfers and the
golf industry can make an amazing and near immediate impact
for each family who has experienced a devastating loss. Golfers
and non-golfers alike can learn more about Patriot Golf
Day, or simply how to donate, by visiting the web sites
of the Fallen Heroes Foundation and Wounded Warriors, Inc.
Participating golf courses can be located at PlayGolfAmerica.com.
