What should we do with our Florida Landfills? How
about turn them into golf courses! Abandoned land areas
in Florida have always been a concern for local communities.
Landfills which in the past were important are often deserted
once they have met their capacity.
Golf courses have been built on landfills for over 39 years.
The National Golf Foundation believes there are over 65 landfill
courses throughout the country. Much has been learned about
successful construction techniques and operating standards,
and this experience will be applied to the development.
The land that remains may present a variety of environmental
and economic impacts. Adjacent land values may be affected
by their proximity to abandoned land. Water quality may be
influenced by possible surface water and groundwater contamination
as a result of the prior land use.
Improving these potentially hazardous sites is definitely
in the best interest of future generations. Often times, Florida
golf courses are included to create interest, recreation,
beauty and value.
Turning Florida Landfills Into Florida Golf Courses
When landfills are converted into golf courses, many changes
must take place. Wetland areas are created improving water
quality and providing needed habitat for fish and wildlife.
Wells must be dug to clean and purify the ground water, methane
gas must be captured and rerouted.
Gas extraction systems have been installed that will capture
and treat landfill gas. The gas system will eliminate odor
and prevent the migration of gas off premises or into enclosed
structures built on the site.
Existing landfills have been reclaimed and real value has
been created for man and the environment. Land which was once
considered inappropriate for residential homesites, become
living communities once again.
