Callaway Golf was founded in 1982 by former Burlington
Industries textile president Ely Callaway. Mr. Callaway sold
his Temecula, CA-based winery and was enjoying a brief retirement
before getting into the golf club making business.
Ely was playing plenty of golf and was always looking for
new business opportunities when he spotted a wooden pitching
wedge in a Palm Springs-area golf shop. The club was reminiscent
of the hickory-shafted clubs he had used as a child, but this
shaft was hollowed and filled with a steel core for consistency
and strength. He purchased half of Hickory Stick USA and renamed
it Callaway Hickory Stick USA.
Mr. Callaway hired successful billiard cue designer Richard
C. Helmstetter to become chief club designer. Ely bought
out his partners and shortened the company name to Callaway
Golf. During this time, Helmstetter invented a large-volume
(190cc) steel clubhead that was much different from other
drivers on the market.
This new club was easier to hit and more forgiving, and Mr.
Callaway named the club Big Bertha after the World War I German
cannon, which was famous for its distance and accuracy. The
new technology forever changed the golf equipment industry,
and in 1992, Callaway Golf went public on the NYSE.
Callaway Golf Company of Carlsbad, CA is one of the
worlds best known brands of premium golf equipment around
today. The American company manufactures Callaway Golf woods,
irons, wedges, putters and golf balls and licenses its name
for apparel, footwear, timepieces and accessories. Callaway
Golf also owns and manufactures products under the Odyssey
putter brand and Top-Flite and Ben Hogan golf brands.
