The unique sands of the beaches in the Destin area are
among the whitest and most homogenous of the world. Consisting
of small quartz particles, this sand came from a process involving
the Appalachian Mountains and the Apalachicola River 20,000
years ago. The Apalachicola River, rising in the Appalachians,
carried water to the Gulf of Mexico and continues today.
Destin is located on Florida's Emerald Coast, east
of Fort Walton Beach/Okaloosa Island and west of Sandestin/Seaside
Florida. The Destin/Emerald Coast area is know for it's sugar
white sand beaches, golf courses, deep sea, off shore, bottom,
pier, bay and lake fishing, boating, windsurfing and an unlimited
number of additional water reaction activities.
Destin is well known for the World Championship Cobia
Tournament March thru April where thousands of cobia from
the Caribbean travel to upper Gulf waters to spawn, they come
closest to shore in the shallow emerald waters. Over a two-month
span, 15,000 cobia fishing fanatics enjoy the best sport fishing
in the country while spectators watch weigh-ins at the World
Champion Cobia Tournament.
Golfers pour in non-stop, so there is no true "off-season"
in the Destin area, but some seasons are not so crowded as
others (November). The beautiful climate on the Emerald Coast
of Florida is near perfect year round, and experts to just-for-fun
golfers will find the perfect course among the variety of
golf courses in Destin and South Walton Beaches.
The Destin area is also famous for its family entertainment,
great shopping, deep sea fishing, world class restaurants,
golfing, and exciting nightlife. Shopping on the Emerald Coast
ranges from shopping malls to quaint sea side boutiques.
The city of Destin hosts several events that draw
hundreds of thousands of visitors every year.
